Our Team Just Brought the Stanley Cup Home
The Purple Press Our Team Just Brought the Stanley Cup Home
Twenty years. That's how long us Caniacs waited.
On June 14, the Carolina Hurricanes walked into Las Vegas and shut the door — a 3-0 Game 6 win over the Golden Knights to bring the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh for the first time since 2006.
Taylor Hall opened the scoring less than four minutes in. Jackson Blake doubled it. Nikolaj Ehlers buried the empty-netter. Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots he faced for his first career playoff shutout. And when it was over, 37-year-old captain Jordan Staal — Conn Smythe winner, seventeen years removed from his first Cup — got to lift it again. Rod Brind’Amour, who captained the 2006 team, did it a second time from behind the bench. Carolina finished the postseason 16-3, a run second only to the 1988 Oilers. Nearly 200,000 people packed downtown Raleigh for the parade on June 20. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t, you heard it.And we were in Vegas for Game 6. Wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
We’ve Been Here the Whole Time.

This one hit different for us because we’ve been flying the flag for this team through every heartbreak that led here. Eight straight playoff runs. Three conference final exits. A lot of people would have found something else to do on a Tuesday night in May. Derek didn’t. That’s the same stubborn, show-up-every-day energy that gets a food truck out the door at six in the morning — and it’s why watching Staal raise that Cup felt like something we’d all earned a little piece of.
We rolled into Vegas running on about 8 hours of sleep over the last 48 hours, grabbed some lunch, may or may not have hit the casino for 30 minutes, threw on our Canes gear, and headed to T-Mobile Arena. One of the things I love most about sports is the memories they create. Carolina Hurricanes hockey has given our family so many incredible moments over the years, and last night instantly became one we’ll be talking about forever. The kiddos will never forget that!
Wear your Canes gear to the truck. Tell us where you watched Game 6. We want to hear all of it. Twenty years was a long time. The bowls are worth the wait too.
Let’s go, Canes.
