One Surf Trip, One Dream: The Story Behind Buoy Bowls
Every purple truck you see today traces back to a single morning surf session that had nothing to do with food at all. Our founder, Derek, was introduced to his first açaí bowl by a friend after a session at the beach — and it changed the trajectory of his life more than any wave ever could.
Back home on the East Coast, Derek ran into a problem:
Nobody around him had any idea what açaí even was. A small shop offered occasional relief, but the idea of building something of his own around that first bite stuck with him. It wasn’t until a later surf trip to Puerto Rico, followed by the realization that his new hometown of Apex, NC had zero açaí options, that the idea finally became a plan.
In January 2016, that plan hit the pavement, literally.
The very first Buoy Bowls truck rolled out to bring açaí to the Raleigh-Durham area. No storefront, no shortcuts, just a food truck and a mission to recreate that same “love at first bite” feeling for anyone willing to try something new.
Years later, the mission hasn’t changed, even as the fleet has grown.
Every bowl blended today, whether it’s rolling through Apex or parked on the sand in Ocean Isle Beach, is still an extension of that one surf trip and one simple belief: good ingredients and good energy should be easy to find. Thanks for being part of the ride.
